Aayirathil Oruvan (spelt as Ayirathil Oruvan in the CBFC certificate) is a Tamil language film starring M. G. Ramachandran and Jayalalitha in the lead roles. The film was released in 1965. The last song “Atho Antha Paravai” (Live like that bird) of the movie was a great creation which was portrayed brilliantly by MS Viswanathan and B.R. Panthulu. This is a western style of song and still remembered by tamil music lovers.
The movie was inspired from a swashbuckling Errol Flynn starrer, Captain Blood (1935 film) made by First National Pictures and Warner Brothers. M.G. Ramachandran was a huge fan of Errol Flynn and had also acted in the movie ‘Malai Kallan’ which was inspired from Errol Flynn’s version of ‘Robin Hood’.
The movie story is based on the story of sea-pirates and independence achieved against a cruel tyrant. MGR,(MANIMARAN), who plays as ‘Maruthuvar’ (Doctor) helps in curing illness of one of the rebels who was protesting against the ruler of the ‘Neidhal’ naadu (country). The ruler gets angry and arrests the rebels. MGR is also arrested for helping the rebels. MGR and the rebels are sold as slaves by the ruler to the nearby island called ‘Kanni Theevu’, ruled by Sengappan. MGR leads the slaves, and fights for their rights.
Jayalalitha plays the character of Poongodi, daughter of Sengappan. As one can easily guess, she falls in love with MGR at the first sight. Despite the differences between her and MGR, she tries to attract him on many occasions. She even offers freedom to MGR from slavery. But the protagonist rejects the offer and explains her that he will fight for freedom of all the slaves.
Meanwhile, the island is attacked by pirates, headed by Nambiyar. As Sengappan’s troop was out of the island on another assignment, Sengappan has to depend on MGR and the other rebel slaves to help him. MGR demands Sengappan that they have to be left free. Sengappan agrees to give freedom to them if they fight against the pirates. But at the end, Sengappan cheats them and retracts his word.
MGR and his fellowmen plan a plot to escape from the place via sea. They reach the pirate ship against whom they fought a while back. MGR explains Nambiyar about their position and asks Nambiyar to help them to escape from that place. Nambiyar helps MGR, fights against Sengappan and promises him to take them to ‘Neidhal’ naadu. Instead he takes them to his place and arrest them. He asks them to work for him (as pirate) as they are very brave. When MGR rejects his plea, Nambiyar orders his men to kill MGR’s people. With no option in place, MGR agrees to be a pirate. In one of his pirate hunt, he finds Sengappan and Poongodi. He brings Poongodi to his place, tried hiding her from Nambiyar. Nanjappan, the right hand of Nambiyar, tells him about Poongodi and so by the policy of that place, Poongodi is auctioned. MGR buys her and keeps her with him (!!).
After few dramatic events between MGR, Poongodi, Nambiyar, and his wife, Nambiyar becomes a good man and accompanies MGR to achieve his goal of saving his motherland Neidhal Naadu from the clutches of its cruel leader. The movie ends with everyone asking MGR to become their head, which MGR politely rejects as he wants to continue his doctor job and serve the people. This movie portrays MGR as a kind, noble, lovable, braveful and as a true leader. Movies like ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ played major role and helped him so much during his political life.
All the songs in this film are super hits. Especially the philosophical songs in this film were best used during the election campaigns in later years by the AIADMK party founded by MGR.
